How Pickleball Scoring Works
Pickleball scoring depends on the format you are playing. Under Standard Scoring, only the serving player or team can score. Standard Doubles also uses a three-number score call and starts every Game at 0-0-2.
The 2026 USA Pickleball rulebook also includes a provisional Rally Scoring option, where every rally winner scores. This guide explains both systems, server number, side outs, Singles, Doubles, and common Game formats.

Pickleball Score Calls at a Glance
Pickleball scoring can look confusing at first because the score is not always called the same way. Singles normally uses two numbers. Standard Doubles uses three. A Standard Doubles Game begins at 0-0-2.
Under the provisional 2026 Rally Scoring option, Doubles goes back to a two-number score because there is no First Server / Second Server sequence. The easiest way to understand the sport is to separate Standard Scoring from Rally Scoring.

Under Standard Scoring, only the serving player or team can score a point. Under the provisional 2026 Rally Scoring option, the player or team that wins each rally scores a point.
Standard Pickleball Scoring: Only the Serving Side Scores
USA Pickleball's 2026 rulebook calls the normal scoring method Standard Scoring. ScoreMetrik labels this option Traditional Side-Out scoring.
Under Standard Scoring, a point is earned by serving and winning the rally.
- If the serving player or team wins, the serving side scores one point and keeps the serve, subject to the correct service sequence.
- If the receiving player or team wins, it does not score a point; the serve progresses or changes under the Singles or Doubles service sequence.

How to Read a Standard Doubles Pickleball Score
Standard Doubles uses a three-number score call in this order: serving team score, receiving team score, then server number.

- The serving team has 5 points.
- The receiving team has 3 points.
- The serving team is currently on its Second Server.
The third number is part of the serving sequence. It is not a permanent player number.
Why Does Pickleball Start at 0-0-2?
A Standard Doubles Game begins at 0-0-2. The first two zeros mean both teams have zero points. The final 2 means the starting team begins the Game with its opening server designated as the Second Server for score-calling purposes.
During a normal Doubles service rotation, a team can have a First Server and then a Second Server before a side out. The opening team is the exception: it receives only one service turn before the first side out.
Opening call: 0-0-2, not 0-0-1
Because losing that opening serve produces an immediate side out, the opening server is designated as Server 2.
What Does Server 1 or Server 2 Mean?
After a normal side out in Standard Doubles, the player correctly positioned on the right side according to the team's score begins that team's service rotation. That player is the First Server. The partner is the Second Server.
- If the First Server loses, no point goes to the receiver, the score stays the same, and the serve passes to the Second Server.
- If the Second Server loses, no point goes to the receiver and a side out gives the serve to the other team.
Server 1 and Server 2 describe the current service rotation. They are not permanent identities, jersey numbers, or court position numbers attached to two players for the whole match.
What Is a Side Out in Pickleball?
A side out means the serve is awarded to the opponent.
Standard Singles: the server loses the rally → side out. The receiver gets no point but becomes the next server.
Standard Doubles: First Server loses → Second Server; Second Server loses → side out.
Opening Doubles: the 0-0-2 server is already the Second Server, so losing that rally produces an immediate side out.
2026 Rally Doubles: one server serves before side out; when the serving team loses, the opponent scores and receives the serve.
Standard Doubles Scoring Example
- Team A starts at 0-0-2 and loses the first rally. Because the opening server is Server 2, this is an immediate side out.
- Team B begins its normal rotation at 0-0-1.
- Team B's First Server wins a rally, making the call 1-0-1.
- That server then loses. Team A receives no point, and Team B moves to 1-0-2.
- Team B's Second Server loses, so a side out gives Team A the serve.
- Serving-team score is called first, so Team A's new call is 0-1-1.
The team scores did not reverse. The spoken order changed because Team A became the serving team.
How Singles Pickleball Scoring Works
Singles uses a two-number score call: server score, then receiver score. For example, 6-4 means the serving player has 6 and the receiving player has 4. A Singles Game begins 0-0, with no third server-number value.
- If the server wins, the server scores and continues serving.
- If the receiver wins, the receiver does not score; a side out occurs and the receiver becomes the new server.
Singles Serving Side: Even Right, Odd Left
The server's score determines the correct serving area in Singles.
Even → Right
Odd → Left
A server at 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, or another even score serves from the right. A server at 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, or another odd score serves from the left.
2026 Provisional Rally Scoring
USA Pickleball's 2026 rulebook includes Rally Scoring as a provisional option for Singles and Doubles. Under that option, the player or team that wins each rally scores one point.
- If the serving side wins, it scores and continues serving under the Rally Scoring service rules.
- If the receiving side wins, it scores, a side out occurs, and that side becomes the serving side.
This differs from Standard Scoring, where a receiving-side rally win changes service without adding a point.
Can the Receiving Side Win Game Point in 2026 Rally Scoring?
Yes. The 2026 provisional rule awards a point to the player or team that wins each rally, including at Game point. A receiving side can therefore win the Game or Match by winning that rally.
Older explanations based on the 2025 provisional rule may say that the Game-winning point had to be scored while serving. That restriction is not part of the 2026 Rule 14.A point-scoring language. For current 2026 play, use the current rulebook rather than an older Rally Scoring summary.
How Rally Doubles Scoring Is Called
Rally Doubles does not use the Standard Doubles three-number score call. Under 2026 Rally Scoring, the score is called as two numbers: server score, then receiver score.
Rally opening score: 0-0, not 0-0-2
Rally Doubles uses one server per team before a side out. There is no Standard Doubles Server 1 / Server 2 third number in the Rally Scoring score call.

Rally Scoring has not replaced Standard Scoring. In the 2026 USA Pickleball rulebook, it remains a provisional option.
How Many Points Win a Pickleball Game?
A typical Standard Pickleball Game is played to 11 points and requires at least a two-point lead. An 11-9 score can finish a Game, while 11-10 cannot. If play continues to 12-10, the two-point margin can end the Game.
USA Pickleball tournament rules also recognize formats involving Games to 15 or 21, depending on the event and match format. The rules for the match determine whether the target is 11, 15, or 21 and how many Games are needed to win.
Which Pickleball Scoring Format Should You Use?
For normal play, Standard Scoring remains the standard method described by the 2026 USA Pickleball rulebook. Use Rally Scoring when the match or event has specifically selected the provisional option.
For an organized tournament, league, club event, or competition, follow its published scoring rules rather than assuming every event uses the same target or scoring method. For casual play, agree on the format before the Game begins.

Pickleball Scoring FAQ
Why does pickleball start at 0-0-2?
Standard Doubles starts at 0-0-2 because the team that serves first receives only one service turn before the first side out. The starting server is therefore designated Server 2 for the opening service rotation.
What does the third number mean in pickleball?
In Standard Doubles, the third number is the serving team's server number. For example, 5-3-2 means the serving team has 5, the receiving team has 3, and the serving team is on its Second Server.
Is Server 1 always the same player?
No. First Server and Second Server describe the current service rotation after a side out. They are not permanent player numbers for the whole match.
What is a side out?
